Your site looks great. I do have a question. One of my ancestors was member of the Masonic Temple at Post and Montgomery. His funeral was at the Temple on May 3, 1896 his name was Gustavus Spear. I would like any information on his family, like name of wife and any children. Do you know where any of his records would be? any help would be appreciate Eugene Beckett P.O. Sirs, In your Charleston timeline ( http://www.scottishritecalifornia.org/charleston_time_line.htm ) you have "the Capital of the state being moved from Charleston to Columbia in both 1786 and 1790. Do you know which it is? Check out my original patriotic Poems at www.PoetPatriot.com “Liberty is maintained by responsible freedom.” – Roger W Hancock

Gentlemen, I am not a Mason but I am in posession of a photograph of the "Sacramento Scottish Rite Temple Consistory class Nov. 17, 1945". It is in excellant condition and still in the original mailing tube when it was mailed to my Grand Father, who was a Mason, as was my Father. If you are interested in this photo please let me know as it would be my pleasure to send it to you. Respectfully, Jack Hardy

I am so glad that you do have a website where one is able to learn about your organization . I am very fascinated by the Freemason Order. I think primarily because of its ancient origins. But what I'm doing is delaying telling you why I'm really sending you this e-mail. I'll just get to the point: about two years ago, I had a dream where I was observing from a bird's eye view the interior of a building, specifically what appeared to be an auditorium. What I saw were women and children milling about in this room. There was nothing odd or haunting about this vignette. The feeling I got was quite matter a fact. And, get this: about 6 months later, I happened to be right by the old Scottish Rite Temple, now the San Jose Athletic Club, on the corner of 3rd St. and St. James St. in San Jose, CA. I've lived in this town for 44 years. It's my hometown. And I enjoy looking at the historical buildings around St. James Park. Well, to make a short story not any longer, I just happened to ask the staff at the San Jose Athletic Club if I could just take a peek inside because I happen to love the architecture of this building. It's simply beautiful and authoritative and masterful. And as she began to tour me around, we entered the auditorium first. And wouldn't you know it?! It was the very same room I had dreamt of 6 months earlier, approximately. I recognized it right away. It was awesome, but at the same time spooky because I had never had that happen to me ever before in my whole life. I know that I sound almost childish in my explanation of how I felt but I can't find any other simpler or more honest way to express myself. I mean, I actually dreamt of this place and had never laid eyes on it prior to this dream until I asked, just by chance, if I could take a look inside. So, tell me, what do you think? What I've told you is in utmost sincerity and wonderment. Please e-mail be back to get your wonderful fraternity's opinion on this, okay?

Question about the 'fundamental degrees'. I checked with Bill Rogers, who heads up our classroom instruction, and he was under the impression this referred to 1,2,3,4,14,18,30 and 32 Degrees. Is their a difference between fundamental and obligatory? 31st degree - Inspector Inquisitor: This degree teaches prayerful self-examination. The mistakes today should not be committed tomorrow. Simply, the daily look at ones self to learn to live with the future. No apron is worn in the Supreme Tribunal, but in inferior bodies, a white sheep-skin apron with a silver Teutonic cross may be worn. The jewel is a silver Teutonic cross. The jewel may be suspended from a white collar, with a gold triangle with a "31" inside it. But in inferior bodies it may be suspended from a golden chain, the links of which form the eight fundamental degrees of Masonry: The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 14th, 16th, 18th, and 30th. You write: "Alexandre-Francois Auguste, Marquis de Grasse, arrived in Charleston, South Carolina on August 14, 1793 aboard the ship "Thomas." Accompaning him on this voyaue was his wife, daughters, four sisters, and stepmother. According to tradition, they were hospitably received by John B. Holmes at his dwelling, now 15 Meeting Street." I recently acquired a bronze coin from C& S bank. The date is June 29, 1929. What is the significance of this coin? I did read that the officers were given a bronze coin when the bank opened. Was this tradition continued? If so, through which years? I look forward to hearing from you.

We are most happy to discover your site. It is delightful - and informative. In the writeup on the site is mentioned Louis Timothy, a protege of Benjamin Franklin, and the South Carolina Gazette - 1734. Later is mentioned his death in 1738. Is there any way of finding out more about him from Masonic records? We have a great deal - but information from those who actually knew him would be most helpful. Thank you and keep up the good work. James Wilds - a direct descendent - and former Mason (60 years ago more or less).

Good morning, Your site is very helpful to me and has given me a better insight as to the history of the Santa Barbara Lodge/Temple. My father Don Denver Field Jr. and grandfather Don Denver Field Sr. were Masons in Lansing, Michigan. My father asked me as a teenager to become a Job's daughter, but I did not understand this organization and declined at the time. I am now 56 and work full time at Cottage Hospital as a Radiology Transcriber. My husband and I returned from our vacation in Sedona, AZ last Saturday. We were at Airport Rd. to view and enjoy the sunset with our oldest son, our daughter-in-law, and our two granddaughters when we walked over to the Masonic Lodge and stood at the dedication and open air altar. This refreshed my memory of my father and grandfather (and also my mother-in-law's mother Fannie Cowing of Homewood, Illinois who was an Eastern Star). I have been reading various sites from the web pages which include graces, poetry, and humor, charity and spiritual values of the Masons. Thank you for providing your information and please contact me if I can be of help to you. Sincerely Pat Schneider 425 W. Padre E18 Santa Barbara CA 93105 c-phone (805)698-0366 Home (805) 563-7713

Hello, I just wanted to write a short note that I really like your web site and I found it to be very informative. There is one thing I noticed that shold be corrected on your site. You list of Grand Lodges list one as the Grand Lodge of Ontario which is not accurate. THe actual correct term is The Grand Lodge of Canada in the Province of Ontario. At one time when Canada only had a few provinces this GL was the GL of Canada. As Canada grew and Provincial GLs were formed some Masons took issue with our GL becing called the GL of Canada and with what that title implied, which is why the Province of Ontario was added. Sincerely and Fraternally, Dave Clark

I have been interested in Freemasonry for a long time. My interest was sparked by reading “Morals and Dogma” and History of Freemasonry. I am on my PhD in Religious studies and History. My second degree is in Architectural engineering. I want to use my skills to benefit my lodge and develop friendship with others of a like-mind. It is my genuine hope that when I seek admission to this honorable society, I will be warmly received. My question to all: Is there any advantage asking the to join the lodge trough a known member(My acquaintance), instead just calling the lodge and ask them to join. What is the best to do?

My name is Edmund Marco and it's a pleasure to sign your guest book. I work for an advertising agency in London. Our agency represents direct marketing companies that are involved in the marketing of products as seen on TV in England. Most of the infomercial products come from the U.S. but then again we export our talents as well. My brother has appeared in infomercials in the U.S. advertising various products. I think it's hilarious that English people respond so well to American products while Americans tend to respond well to sales people who have an English accent!

...You asked for people to let you know what we think about your site...I Love It! I have been interested in the streets of Charles Towne and Charleston for several years now....I was looking for a certain tavern of early Charles Towne and no one could tell me..anything...So I started with the Deed Books published by C. Langley..."charting" and "abstracting" Charles Towne...which brings me to a few questions if you have time....to answer them. I know that you used the Ichnography Map of 1739?...Lady Street in my early research I show as being a street that ran through part of Schenckingks Square...Can you tell me if this is correct? Schenckingks Street (1739)...now called Hasell Street?? Thomas Street (1739) ...now called North Market Street??? I make notes as I go when charting or abstracting....I just like to be accurate...as possible... Can you tell me if my notes are close? Thank you again for your time, for I know the time it takes to set up and maintain a well done site such as yours. I don't suppose you also know where the old Taverns of early Charles Towne were...like the Sign of the Griffin? Sincerely, Mary Elizabeth Manis Miller

Good stuff. I've been asked to explain the difference between Scottish Rite Double-Headed Eagles with Wings Up and Wings Down. There is also a question on the validity of the Motto for 33rd Degrees at local, state and national level. Are there differences in these mottos? I have an old Masonic Encyclopedia by Macey, Copyrighted 1884. I wonder if there are many changes in term between then and now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your site is most interesting and well-executed. Thank you. I am researching Mitchells (mainly) from the North-west of Ireland and particularly the area of Killymallaght, co. Londonderry. One Robert Mitchell was Master of the Killymallaght Lodge (Lodge No. 633) in 1815 - 1830, before this lodge moved to Londonderry, and many other family members were masons -- in Ireland, Canada and the USA. Do you have any futher genealogical information on your founder Col. John Mitchell? Kind regards & many thanks Dave Mitchell

Dear Brother Powell, I have only had a 30-minute visit to vast bicentennial web site, and I am much impressed, as well as confused by the fact that you have not submitted this web site as an Internet entry in the Supreme Council's 2001 Bicentennial Excellence in Publication Awards competition. Why not? Let me know. See the January 2000 Grand Commander's message on this subject if this comes as news to you. Secondly, I have already e-mailed Ill. Burbidge about his use of articles originally published in the Scottish Rite Journal. Aside from not asking reprint permission (which we would have gladly given), he has not indicated, as is custom in the world of publication, that several of the segments in his Biennial segment of your web site are lifted verbatim from the Journal. I am asking him (and you) to give proper attribution.
